Can I insert an image into my survey?

Yes, it is possible to insert an image into a survey. However, this does rely on the image already being uploaded on another Web site as we don't allow people to upload images to our server.

So, for example if you were to upload the image to somewhere on your institution's Web site the URL to the image might be:

http://www.poppleton.ac.uk/marketing/logo.gif

Assuming that's been done the next steps are:

  1. Open your survey for editing and then open the page you want to insert the note/image on.
  2. At the bottom of the page will be a button which says 'Add Note', press this.
  3. You should then see the Edit Note page. This has a little editor on it and this has some buttons similar to those you might see in Microsoft Word (e.g. bold, italic etc)
  4. Press the button that has a picture of a little tree on it. This is on the second row of buttons and is on the right hand side.
  5. A pop-up window will appear. The most important parts of this are:
    Image URL
    and
    Image description
  6. In the Image URL box type in the Web address for your image, e.g.
    http://www.poppleton.ac.uk/marketing/logo.gif
  7. In the Image Description box type a description of the image, e.g.
    University of Poppleton logo
  8. Press 'Insert' - the pop-up will then disappear and the image will appear in the note window. You can now add text with the image if you want.
  9. When you're finished press 'Save' and your note and image should be inserted.

Please note: If you have bought the survey encryption cost option and are embedding an image located on your institution's servers then users may receive a pop-up warning stating “This page contains both secure and non-secure items. Do you want to download the non-secure items?”.

This warning is a result of the survey being served securely from our server (via https://) but the image being served from your server (via http://). In most cases the best solution is to simply warn users on the first page of the survey that they may see this warning and to select to download the image. Data collected via the survey will be unaffected and will remain encrypted.
